Playlist for 10-1-2013 WFCF - Jazz Greats 1961!

"1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB" - Matt Hoskins

The first in a series of shows to focus on the jazz of a specific year, chronologically. This week, it was 1961! Something of a transitional time for jazz, where artists who broke new ground in 1959 or earlier, were now following these paths to new, uncertain territory. Provocative music from John Coltrane that befuddled the critics; Miles in a state of flux; Bill Evans, Scott Lofaro & Paul Motian redefining the jazz piano trio: and Cannonball enjoying stardom after the Miles sextet. Mixed in with all of this are artists oblivious to all the change; hard-boppers on the cusp of their heyday, groove jazz taking further root and "world" music about to become permanently embedded in the jazz vocabulary. Sounds serious! But we had the usual fun. Thanks for the calls, hangin' on Facebook and especially for tuning in! - Kendo

Playlist for 3-26-2013 WFCF - Jazz Greats Grant Green Show!

I've really been looking forward to this! An all Grant Green show that covers most of his solo career - with selections from 15 of his albums. (There's a picture of all the albums we'll delve into over on the Facebook page.) We heard early hard-bop efforts all the way through to the deep funk tracks. Sidemen like Larry Young, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Yusef Lateef, Art Blakey, Jack McDuff, Ike Quebec, Elvin Jones, Idris Muhammed and James Spaulding kept things interesting. Hope you had fun, I was having a grand ol' time in the control booth with that sweet playback system! Thanks for checking in! - DJ Kendo
