Spring is here, baseball is underway, lovely weather here in NE Florida, and it's Earth Day! No themed show today, just as much good music and variety as can be squeezed in 4 hours. I heard or stumbled upon a lot of good stuff during the week (including a Record Store Day outing). In particular, a playlist made up of music recorded in 1962. As always we'll be hitting up the new jazz shelf at WFCF, and a special treat last set for folks who stay tuned to the end. All this Tuesday, April 22nd, from 3-7pm Eastern. Listen online by clicking here, and stop by the FB page to say hi! See you then - Kendo

The Weekly Recommend - 4-17-2014 - Bennie Green!

Thought I might start something new here, for folks who trust my taste in jazz - a weekly recommended album. So if you're itchin' for new music in your collection, check by this page between shows (I'm gonna shoot for every Thursday).

Bennie Green - "Bennie Green"

Time Records (1960)

Today's recommended album is from a somewhat forgotten trombonist - Bennie Green; overshadowed in jazz memory by Curtis Fuller & J.J. Johnson; perhaps because he remained firmly straight-ahead in spite of all going on in the '60s. This recording dates from 1960 and features Jimmy Forrest on tenor sax, Sonny Clark on piano (who wrote 3 of the cuts), George Tucker on bass, Al Dreares on drums & Joseph Gorgas on bongos.

It's an easy going affair, but one that swings it's butt off; with clever arranging that keeps it interesting. In every way, Green & Forest sound absolutely fantastic together. The blowing is relaxed but heartfelt, with each occasionally digging in to take things up a notch. As already mentioned, the rhythm section is a locomotive. The groove is nearly hypnotic, once they start rollin' it gets very difficult to pull yourself away from the music. Sonny Clark is in primo form, as well.

Highlights are an unusually bright and fun "Solitude", "Sonny's Crip" - a fine blues with "So What" responses & a bridge, and a simmering rendering of "Cool Struttin'". The opener "Sometimes I'm Happy" is a little on the cute side, but still has the irrestible groove that pervades the entire session. The sound quality is dandy, clear yet lush, and the bongos are not too high in the mix. It won't blow your mind, but it is very enjoyable jazz; perfect for unwinding after a busy day. Please note that this particular release is only available in mp3 format. The price is right!
4 out of 5.

Playlist for 3-25-2014 WFCF - Jazz Greats!

"Jazz" - Marcelo Bittencourt

Happy Spring, everybody! For this week's show, diversification was an inspiration - playing artists or albums that haven't appeared on the show, before. Also, an initial goal for doing the dj thing was/is to bring back into focus recent albums that get lost or forgotten, because of the ever-flowing influx (in vast amounts) of new music. So today we'll hear some quality tracks from last year; namely Michael Blanco, Barbara Morrison, Mark Gross and Brad Mehldau. At 5:30 we bring back the "Virgin Sacrifice" - with an unopened vinyl copy of "Moon Rappin'" by Jack McDuff (courtesy of Jim Driscoll). And to top it off, folks who tune in or stay tuned til the end will hear the "Jazz Odyssey" track - this week it's a slayer from Chuck Mangione Quartet (1972). Thanks for listening! - DJ Kendo
